Masculinity, Identity and Online Influence

The full recording is now available through the Bright Futures Communities of Practice portal.

Join us as Dr Sophie King-Hill discusses how traditional ideals of masculinity focused on dominance and emotional restraint can create identity tension for some boys and young men, particularly when combined with social and developmental pressures.

Online environments may reinforce these norms and amplify harmful narratives, shaping attitudes toward relationships and gender. A prevention-focused approach recognises these influences and supports critical reflection, healthy relationships, and more positive, diverse expressions of masculinity.

About the Presenter

Dr Sophie King-Hill is an Associate Professor at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham. Her research focusses on the sexual behaviours and assessment of children and young people, sexual health, sibling sexual behaviour-abuse, misogyny, relationships, sex and health education (RSHE), young men and masculinities, and youth voice.
